On the Journey Home: Contemporary Landscape Watercolour Painting

The technique and art of water-based painting date to ancient times, and belong to the history of many cultures; among these cultures, China is undoubtedly the most prominent in this art. However, possibly along with the rise of European powers and their global influence, watercolour painting became commonly associated with Britain during the period extending roughly from the mid-eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century. Consequently even the Chinese nowadays would call Britain “the homeplace of watercolour painting.” On the other hand, Chinese painting is one of the oldest continuous and living artistic traditions in the world, and landscape painting is historically at the top of the hierarchy of Chinese painting genres. In this sense, the title of this exhibition, “On the Journey Home,” could have a double implication – to the “home” of British watercolour painting, and to the “home” of Chinese landscape painting.
